- Soak up the Sun on a Tropical Beach
For many, Bali’s beaches are what first draws them to the island – and there really is no shortage of great options for you to choose from. Enjoy the golden sands and convenience of Kuta beach, or head down to the Bukit peninsula where golden sands and world-class surf breaks await you at Bingin, Balangan and Padang Padang, to name just three. Head north towards Candidasa, Amed or Lavina and enjoy peace and seclusion and on a deserted beach, and snorkel in calm waters amongst tropical fish on coral reefs. While we’re talking beaches, we really need to mention the great beach clubs too. Descending the cliff via the inclanator at Finns Beach Club, you won’t fail to be impressed by the golden sands of this private beach and stunning views of the Indian Ocean. In Seminyak Potato Head remains a firm favourite to sip a cocktail in the beach side infinity pool and Nikki Beach in Nusa Dua is another hip joint to chill for the day.
- Fine Food and Hip Bars
When it comes to options for eating and drinking, Bali really does take some beating. Enjoy the delights of Indonesian cuisine in local warungs or in a fine dining setting at Republik 45 or Merah Putih. For seafood lovers, Sardine in Seminyak provides a stylish setting, whilst freshly grilled fish on Jimbaran beach under a setting sun never fails to impress. The choices are endless – Barbacoa serves up Latin American flavours with it’s great barbecued pork, Sarong, remains a flag ship of award winning chef Will Meryrick where Asian flavours enthuse the senses. When it comes to bars the choices are equally endless. Stunning sunsets and delicious cocktails are the order of the day at the ultra cool Rock Bar, perched on rocks at the bottom of the cliffs, or from the spectacular cliff top setting of El Kabron. Soak up the cool vibe and laid back beats at Woo Bar, part of W Retreat and Spa, or just pull up a beanbag and enjoy a cool beer on the beach wherever you find yourself around the island. If you want to keep the party going, Bali attracts some of the very best DJs from around the world. Catch them at some islands night-time hotspots including Jenja, Mirror and Mint, and dance the night away.
- Temples and Local Culture
The traditions of local culture permeate daily life in Bali. From the sounds of Gamelan music, to the daily rituals and offerings placed at the side of the road, in front of temples and buildings, to ceremonies such as Nyepi (Balinese New Year) and Galungan. The sounds and sites of ceremonial processions touch the soul and set Bali apart from being just another tourist destination. Visit the stunning cliff top temple of Uluwatu, and watch the spectacle of the Kecak Dance under a setting sun. Tannah Lot Temple provides another breath taking setting to witness the natural beauty and traditions of Bali. Besakih – Bali’s Mother Temple – sits on the slopes of Mount Agung and has 18 sanctuaries, one for each of the castes found in Balinese Hinduism. A visit here will place you at the heart of spiritual life on the island.
The warm waters and reliable world-class waves have been drawing surfers from around the world to Bali for decades. That said, time it right and get to know the many breaks the island has to offer and you can still enjoy empty waves as the sun rises over palm trees. The beach breaks of Kuta and Canggu provide great waves for beginners and no end of fun for more experienced surfers. If you’re new to surfing there are numerous surf school and instructors and boards can be hired right on the beach. Uluwatu is synonymous with Bali in the surfing world and the waves here or at other spots on the Bukit Peninsula, including Padang Padang, Binging, Dreamland and Impossibles are going to keep you wanting more.
